On Thursday, June 11, 2009, the Yellowstone Art Museum breaks ground on the Visible Vault. Billings will be the first city in the northern Rockies region to have an art museum that has designed its collection storage vault to be accessible to the public.
See how we preserve the 7,300-object collection that was built by the community through donations. The Visible Vault will also house an artist-in-residence studio.
Learn about cultural preservation and watch an artist at work in the artist-in-residence studio. The Visible Vault will be an art preservation laboratory where you can find out about behind-the-scenes preparations for exhibitions, how art is packed to lend to other museums, and what kinds of professionals work to preserve our artistic heritage for generations to come.
When complete, the Visible Vault will triple the art storage capacity of the Yellowstone Art Museum and provide the right kinds of storage conditions for all of the varied collections that we store. Visitors will be able to browse the collection using our collection database, and make appointments to have specific works brought forward to view.
We project completion of the Visible Vault early in the summer of 2010. Check in here to track the progress of construction.
