East / West: Visually Speaking
March 22, 2012 through July 29, 2012
Opening reception on Thursday, March 29, 2012, 5:30 p.m.
In East/West: Visually Speaking, a new generation of contemporary Chinese artists has burst onto the world stage with an exciting and unprecedented body of work. In this major exhibition, thirteen of China's leading young artists explore China's culturally taboo subjects, western ideas, and individual freedoms through painting, embroidery, mixed media, and sculpture. This exhibition explores the very nature of artistic freedom.
This generation of artists is experiencing the enormous change that globalization is bringing to ancient and sometimes dogmatic tradition. They are among the first wave of Chinese generations to witness, experience, and transform thousands of bits and bytes of western pop culture that are gradually infiltrating and marking their visual landscape. This rapid cultural change leaves many caught in an east-meets-west conundrum. Artists are among China's vanguard in forging a new hybrid identity that responds to changing realities yet is still emphatically Chinese.

The traveling exhibition East / West: Visually Speaking was organized by The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and curated by Dr. Lee Gray. The exhibition is sponsored in part by China Visual Arts, Ltd., and a cultural development grant from the Lafayette Convention and Visitors' Commission.
