Creative Force: The Studio Art Quilt
March 22, 2012 through June 10, 2012
Opening reception on Thursday, April 5, 2012, 5:30 p.m.

This is not your grandmother's quilt! Merging craft and fine art, the art quilter "paints" with thread and "sculpts" with fabric, pushing the boundaries of fine art with new materials, techniques, and interpretations. Creative Force revels in the joy of fine craftsmanship and surprises the viewer with extraordinary effects in fiber and the breadth and diversity of its styles and subject matter. This exceptional exhibition, juried by fiber artist Chunghie Lee, challenges and inspires. Artists from Canada, France, Hungary, the U.K., Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the U.S. are included.

This exhibition comprising 50 eye-popping creations was juried from a pool of 384 entries received from 179 international artists. In this selection, audiences will see achievements they never imagined possible in fiber. A range of figurative, abstract, graphic, and painterly works express many themes: social/political, travel journals, homages to nature, personal memories, and complex relationships. These artists borrow from other media without hesitation, including painting, the graphic arts, photography, collage, felting, printing, and embroidery. With designs both bold and subtle, this exhibition is guaranteed to surprise and delight.

The tour of Creative Force is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

East / West: Visually Speaking
March 22, 2012 through July 29, 2012
Opening reception on Thursday, April 5, 2012, 5:30 p.m.

In East/West: Visually Speaking, a new generation of contemporary Chinese artists has burst onto the world stage with an exciting and unprecedented body of work. In this major exhibition, thirteen of China's leading young artists explore China's culturally taboo subjects, western ideas, and individual freedoms through painting, embroidery, mixed media, and sculpture. This exhibition explores the very nature of artistic freedom.

This generation of artists is experiencing the enormous change that globalization is bringing to ancient and sometimes dogmatic tradition. They are among the first wave of Chinese generations to witness, experience, and transform thousands of bits and bytes of western pop culture that are gradually infiltrating and marking their visual landscape. This rapid cultural change leaves many caught in an east-meets-west conundrum. Artists are among China's vanguard in forging a new hybrid identity that responds to changing realities yet is still emphatically Chinese.

The traveling exhibition East / West: Visually Speaking was organized by The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and curated by Dr. Lee Gray. The exhibition is sponsored in part by China Visual Arts, Ltd., and a cultural development grant from the Lafayette Convention and Visitors' Commission.
