Gifts to Montana: The Legacy of Miriam Sample PDF Print E-mail

Sample_show_DeWeese_1993.047_72July 4, 2008 - October 15, 2008
The extraordinary patronage of Miriam Sample was the reason for this tribute exhibition, which opened less than a month after Miriam passed away. Sixty works were featured from eight of the museums Miriam benefited through hundreds of gifts to their permanent collections. The emphasis was on Montana artists and individual pieces Miriam liked best from among her gifts. Museums included were the YAM, the Missoula Art Museum, the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art in Great Falls, the Whitney Gallery in Cody (Wyoming), the Hockaday in Kalispell, and the Custer County Museum of Art & History in Miles City. Curated by YAM Senior Curator Robert C. Manchester with the close involvement of Miriam Sample, this exhibition was accompanied by a gallery brochure including statements from each of the eight institutions' directors.
