Robert DeWeese: A Look Ahead comes to Billings from the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, which received the estate of Montana artist and teacher Robert DeWeese after his death in 1990. From these immense holdings, the Holter Museum of Art has coordinated a beautiful and comprehensive exhibition. In Billings, we will supplement the exhibition with some of DeWeese’s works in the Yellowstone Art Museum’s permanent collection.

Robert DeWeese (with his wife Gennie and son Josh) was a formidable force on the Montana art scene. Originally from Ohio, he made Montana his home early in his career. As a practicing artist and a teacher at the university level in Bozeman, Bob DeWeese exerted a tremendous influence on both his own generation of artists and those he taught. This exhibition is a much-deserved tribute to an artist whom ceramicist Rudy Autio described as an “artist’s artist.” The breadth and exuberance of DeWeese’s work will reveal how DeWeese translated the trends in the wider art world for Montana’s environment. Celebrating human companionship and the sustaining land, DeWeese’s work exemplifies key points of commonality in the art of this region.

This exhibition was organized by the Holter Museum of Art, Helena, Montana.  Its tour is sponsored by the Museum & Art Gallery Directors' Association of Montana (MAGDA).  Funding was provided for the original coordination of the traveling exhibition by the Montana Cultural & Aesthetic Trust and the Montana Arts Council.
