Carol Hepper: Inside the Between

March 17, 2011 - June 26, 2011

Hepper's background in the ranching life of South Dakota strongly informs sculptures that are built from the traces of living things. Branches and animal skins come together in forms that seem just one remove away from a snag in the stream or a nomad's rapidly built shelter.

Hepper's work is carefully crafted, yet retains the irregularities of natural objects. Tangled, stretched, assembled, and arranged, Hepper helps us see new beauties in materials too often discarded. Her work reveals a contemporary approach to three-dimensional abstraction and to the use of color in unexpected ways, at the same time that it shows us how art can re-infuse life into the surrounding environment.
