The Yellowstone Art Museum invites art enthusiasts and accomplished artists to participate in monthly art classes led by regional artists.Please check back frequently for updates and class information.

Make a wearable piece of art! Learn basic techniques for working with precious metal clay (PMC); experience its creative possibilities and unique properties. Using simple tools, you will form PMC into earrings and a pendant of your own design. After a kiln firing, you will have a creation in fine silver. Susan will teach finishing techniques, including adding a patina. Those who took Susan's previous YAM class may work on a more advanced project. Supply fee of $35 is paid directly to the instructor. Watercolor Painting - "Blur and Focus"
September 18-19, 2010, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday & 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday

Come to the museum to have fun with watercolor paints and color and design basics taught by a gentle professional artist. You'll be surrounded by wonderful art and enjoy the company of like-minded art lovers. Marilyn will emphasize how to achieve focus on the important element in your creation, lest the rest of the painting detract rather than flatter your thought. Demonstrations will be followed by your turn to go at it. Supply list available.

Art Photography Lecture
October 14, 2010, 5:30 p.m.

Long time photography collector and aficionado Fred Longan will discuss art photography, including works in Eye for an Eye: Photographs of Modern Artists by Modern Artists from the Collection of John W. Green. Free for members or with admission to museum.

• Joyce Lee
Drawing
October 16-7, 2010, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday & 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday

Drawing is the basic fundamental of all art and can be an art unto itself. This class provides instruction on drawing with the most user-friendly drawing material: vine charcoal of various sizes. Emphasis will be placed on SEEING values, spatial relationships, shapes, and perspective. You will use a variety of subject matter. You'll use lots of paper but may not go home with a "finished" piece of art. Supply list available.

Introduction to Encaustic Painting
November 6, 2010, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Learn about the basic tools and materials for encaustic as well as about fusing, incising, stenciling, embedding papers for collage, and transferring texture. If time allows, we will cover layering and scraping. Students will create an original painting. Encaustic paint, wax, wax medium, and birch substrates will be provided by the instructor for a supply fee of $15. Supply list available.

John Buck Lecture
November 11, 2010, 7 p.m.

Internationally known Eleanor Heartney is a Contributing Editor to Art in America and Artpress and author of many books and articles on contemporary art. She authored one of the essays in the catalog John Buck: Iconography and will discuss Buck's important body of work within the context of other contemporary artists' work. Heartney received the College Art Association's Frank Jewett Mather Award for distinction in art criticism in 1992 and was honored by the French government as a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2008. Free for members or with admission to the museum. This lecture is sponsored in part by Michael and Karen Fried.

Japanese Shibori Dyeing of Silk
November 20, 2010 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Dye four silk scarves using traditional Japanese resist methods and acid dyes. You will learn bind resist, stitched resist, fold resist, and other methods. You'll also learn about mixing dyes, color blending, choosing colors, safety precautions, and using thickened dyes for painterly affects. We will learn simple surface embellishment techniques as well. Supply fee of $10 paid directly to instructor. Supply list available.

Mixed Media Monoprints
January 15-16, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday

Explore printmaking using relief and intaglio processes with monoprint color. Chine collé techniques will add to the color and texture qualities. This class takes place at Buffalo Art Press, a complete printmaking venue (www.stevekuennen.blogspot.com). The supply fee of $30 is paid directly to the instructor.

Oil Painting Brushstrokes and Color
January 22-23, 2010 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday

Learn the wide variety of paint application and explore bold color. Paint "from the shoulder" using the entire arm to make a more fluid and interesting stroke. Here's an opportunity to experiment, discover, and set aside the method of "this is the way I've always done it." Joyce Lee has become one of the region's respected and collected painters.
