The Yellowstone Art Museum invites art enthusiasts and accomplished artists to participate in monthly art classes led by regional artists. Please check back frequently for updates and class information.
• Debut Film Screening Replikaaa January 13, 2012, 7 p.m.
The unique new film production studio based in San Francisco has produced a fascinating film about aspects of human trafficking. This project that blurs the lines dividing art, medicine, and social issues will have its Montana debut at the YAM. Free to members and included with admission for non-members.
• Dr. Tayeb al-Hafez Introduction to Syrian Culture January 20, 2012, 7 p.m.
This talk will lay the groundwork for tomorrow's workshop with Syrian-German artist Ali Kaaf, or can be an introduction for anyone interested in Syria's rich culture. Lecture is free to members and included with admission for non-members.
• Ali Kaaf Gestural Drawing January 21, 2012, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m
Syrian-German artist Ali Kaaf has been visiting Montana for several years and creating work inspired by this region. Enjoy your own international experience by working with Ali, who creates large, gestural, abstract works in charcoal, graphite, and pigment. Kaaf makes the most of the stark black-white contrast, and is a master at creating seductive textural effects in two dimensions, including controlled burning of paper for specific tonal effects. • Susan Germer Create with Silver Precious Metal Clay January 21, 2012, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Make a wearable piece of art! Learn basic techniques of working with silver Precious Metal Clay (PMC), and exploring the creative possibilities and unique properties of the medium. Using simple tools, form and texture PMC into earrings and pendant of your own design. After kiln firing you will have a creation of fine silver. Finishing techniques will be taught, including adding patina and color. Certified Precious Metal Clay Instructor, Susan Germer, has been creating with PMC for six years and jewelry design has been a main focus for 15-plus years. Her jewelry has been sold in galleries, at shows and in shops in Montana and California. Supply fee of $35 paid to instructor. Supply list available. Class fee $55 for members, $60 for non-members
• Brooke Atherton Snow-dyeing Fabrics January 28, 2012, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Brooke, who is the current artist-in-residence in the YAM's Visible Vault Studio, will lead a session of dyeing and bleaching fabrics using snow and ice as a tool for creating rich, unique patterns. Supply list available. Class fee $30 for members, $35 for non-members.
• Brownie Snyder Introduction to Encaustic February 18, 2012,10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Learn the basic tools and materials and about fusing, incising, stenciling, embedding papers for collage, and transferring texture. If time allows we will cover layering and scraping. Students will create an original painting. Encaustic paint, wax, wax medium, birch substrates are provided by instruction for a supply fee of $15. Supply list available. Class fee $55 for members, $60 for non-members
• Dennis Kern The Next Step with Digital Photographs February 25, 2012, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Learn to manage a portfolio of digital photographs and organize images through selective editing, and anticipated output. Use techniques for photo editing with an eye for strong composition and content, making color corrections and adjustments, and visual elements in photographs. Students need (1) laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop or graphics software with similar capabilities and (2) digital storage units for a library of their own photographs. Dennis is the owner of Rattlesnake Valley Press and a faculty member of the Art Department at MSU-Billings where he teaches computer graphics, drawing, and design. Class fee $30 for members, $35 for non-members
• Deborah Ford Introduction to the Artist's Book and Image Transfer Techniques March 17, 2012, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Explore the artist's book using mixed media transfers and origami book forms with photographic collage. Learn a variety of image transfer techniques including heat, solvent, and acrylic while creating fun and exciting artist's books using origami book-forms. We will explore the playful and serious poetic relationships between the random and deliberate. Many image and book-like structures will be explored. This course is appropriate for all levels of photography experience from beginning through advanced. Some Photoshop is helpful, but not required. Deborah is Professor of Photographic Studies at Prescott College, in northern Arizona where she resides with her family most of the year, with the remaining time spent in Absarokee. • Annemor Sundbø Class April 21, Lecture April 26
Well known Norwegian textile historian Annemor Sundbø and author of five books on Norwegian fiber arts will lecture and teach classes. More details to follow.
• Deborah Ford Cyanotype and Kallitype May 19, 2012, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
This course is a fun hands-on workshop exploring alternative photographic processes and mixed media transfers. Students will learn cyanotype and kallitype (19th-century photographic processes using the sun for exposure) and to make enlarged digital negatives. This course is appropriate for all levels of photography experience from beginning through advanced. Some Photoshop is helpful, but not required.
