Create with Silver Precious Metal Clay

Make a wearable piece of art! Learn basic techniques for working with Precious Metal Clay, creative possibilities and unique properties of the medium. Using simple tools form PMC into earrings and a pendant of your own design. After a kiln firing you will have a creation of fine silver. Finishing techniques will be taught, including adding a patina.

Certified Precious Metal Clay instructor Susan Germer has been creating with PMC for five years. Jewelry design has been Germer's main focus over fourteen years, and she has sold her work in galleries and at shows and shops in Montana and San Francisco.

Supplies needed for the class include:
Favorite rubber stamps, old buttons, items to imprint texture (thread, lace, bark, etc.), X-Acto knife, small-pointed paintbrush

Germer will provide one 189 package of PMC per student and tools to use during class. There will be a $35.00 supply fee to be paid directly to the instructor. Extra PMC and tools will be available for purchase.

Ukrainian Eggs

Learn to decorate eggs with intricate designs using a wax and dye process, much like batik. The process is done on a raw egg, which is later blown out. Students will complete one egg. Supplies are provided for an additional $10.00. Supply list includes: Eggs, paper towels, rubber bands, dyes, cup to hold eggs. A #2 standard decorating kit.

Non-toxic Surface Design on Fabric

Cynthia St. Charles is an internationally recognized award winning textile and quilt artist from Billings. Her work is represented in private collections and galleries throughout the world.

Participants will create one-of-a-kind fabrics using hand-cut printing blocks and original silk screens with non-toxic acrylic paints as featured in Quilting Arts Magazine April-May 2009 issue. Participants will leave with one and a half yards of hand painted and printed fabrics and their own hand-cut printing blocks and silk screen.

Participant supply List:
Come dressed for painting; the paints we use will be permanent on fabric.
- Various width paint brushes from 1" to 4". Disposable "chip" and sponge brushes recommended
- Speedball carving set (instructor will bring some)
- A couple of large new trash bags
- Graphite #2 pencil
- Ideas for imagery
- An old towel that can be splattered with paint
- 4 or more small containers with lids, like yogurt containers
- Plant sprayer

Materials fee of $40.00 includes fabric, paint, silk screen and printing block.

The Color of Light in Oil Painting III

Well-known oil painter James Poulson will demonstrate the use of color and light in oil painting, demonstrating techniques used to develop an effective approach to mimic light sources within the painting. Supplies should include your own painting or a small canvas, brushes, alkyd paint medium or liquid and odorless thinner. Jim's palette includes titanium white, cadmium yellow light, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium orange, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson or rose madder, viridian, sap green, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, dioxazine purple, and Payne's gray. Class costs $55.00 for YAM members and $60.00 for non-members.

Handrubbed China Clay On Fabric: Creating Unique Monotypes

In a one-day workshop, you will be taught the basic methods of hand rubbing china clay images onto fabric. No special skills are required to work wit this innovative art form based on traditional painting techniques. The instructor will lead basic demonstrations and students will practice and create their own original, distinctive and colorful designs to take home, ready for framing.

Victoria Franck Wetsch has a BFA in art and history from the University of Northern Colorado. Her work has been juried into national and international competitions and has been published as book covers. Students will need to bring a protective apron and durable stencils or stencil-like items that are not fragile or brittle.

There will be an additional fee of $15.0 per student to cover their use of materials during the class. Students may purchase the base form following the workshop for an additional $15.00. Included is a thorough instruction booklet written by the instructor.

Reflections

This class provides a creative exercise in using the digital camera to make sustained studies of visual reflections, both abstract and real. The class involves the use and development of design/compositon skills, aesthetic awareness, cooperative skills and arts and humanities appreciation. Intermediate level class for photographers. Required Materials: Digital Camera. SLR style recommended. It is important to be able to control shutter, aperature, and depth of field. It is highly recommended that individuals have an understanding of the importance of camera control in creating images.

Dennis Kern is owner of Rattlesnake Valley Press, a faculty member of the Art Department at MSU-B where he teaches computer graphics, drawing and design, and is the webmaster and photographer for the Rimrock Opera.
